About the Society

Five women founded the Millville Historical Society. They signed the papers on Monday, October 10, 1927, and the certificate was recorded at nine o'clock on the morning of Friday, October 14. They were Rebecca M. Bacon, Margaret N. Rieck, Mary K. Slade, Emma Sherry and Katharine L. Miller, all of Millville.

They wrote down what they were for, and it still holds:

"The general object of this corporation is to acquire a museum in the City of Millville and to properly furnish and equip the same."

They wanted one museum. We now care for three historic buildings.

What we do

We keep the buildings standing, we keep the records safe, and we keep the doors open.

That means roofs, heat, paint and repair on three historic properties. It means an archive that anyone can walk in and use, without charge and without membership. It means open hours every Wednesday and Sunday, most Third Friday evenings, and events through the year: tours, talks, and the Annual Old-Fashioned Ice Cream Social.

The Society's first home was at 218 High Street. We have been at 200 East Main Street, in the 1857 Millville Bank building, since 1977.

Who does it

Volunteers, entirely. The Millville Historical Society has no paid staff. It is governed by an elected volunteer Board of Trustees and run by people who do this in the evenings and on weekends because they think Millville's history is worth keeping.

Our Centennial

The Society turns one hundred in October 2027.

In 2027 the signing anniversary, October 10, falls on a Sunday, a day the Library is already open to the public. The recording anniversary, October 14, falls on a Thursday. Third Friday falls on October 15. Programming is in development.
